'Cable Guy' Lighting
Paul Grummisch had an Asian streetscape in mind when designing the timber isolator for the ‘Cable Guy’ lighting.
The design concept echoes a time of industrialisation in Asia, where electricity first illuminated city streets.
Just the style Mr Myiagi’s Japanese tapas bar in Chapel St, Windsor, wanted when it first opened its door in October this year.
Paul explains that the effect was “to look like electric cables with isolators (the turned timber component) running along the street. The cables draped over the light bracket from one light fitting to the next and all gathered at a terminal point at the back of the space.”
The wooden isolators were hand turned by Steve Curtain to Paul’s detailed drawing. The form modelling coils of high voltage electric isolators used in power generation.
Accentuating the Asian theme, the corrugated profile of the isolator reflects the form of a cylindrical paper lantern. Oriental lanterns once used for lighting symbolise joy, celebration and good fortune - adding to the positive vibe of the new dining house.
The design brief required a timber free from knots to be finished with a dark stain. Victorian ash was selected over pine as it is less porous in nature producing a superior stained finish.
In situ these lights look fabulous with the vintage Edison light bulb hanging bare, suspended with a black angular bracket and exposed cable. The orange-yellow glow of the energy efficient lights harmonise with the graffiti wall on one side of the establishment. Whilst on the more formal side of the bar lights drop vertically from a suspended timber ceiling.
